Thinking, thinking, thinking

I know that I waxed poetic just a few days ago at how much I loved the Mike Allen Quartet doing A Love Supreme.  I took the recording home and put a little reverb on it and a bit of compression and many did it sound good. I listened to it on my bike ride to the club this evening and it really was as good as I remember it!  It made me start to think about some things.  I was here for the James Danderfer Sextet on Saturday as well and as he always does, Danderfer brought his ‘A’ game in every respect; great soloing, great arrangements, great tune choice and of course killing band. They all sounded wonderful.  Then on Sunday night I heard the first set of Jodi’s band and again it was wonderful. As I sit here and write this Im listening the first of two piano trios…this one led by Brad Turner and its absolutely killing.

Here is what sparked my thoughts.  I talked to a friend today who asked me if I had seen anything or was planning on seeing anything for this years festival.  My answer was no and no.   Alot of that has to do with a) having to work and be at the club and b) family responsibilities and c) I don’t really feel the need to go out and deal with bad sound/acoustics, short sets and high ticket prices.  Let me say that this is one of the most intriguing festivals of the last 5 or so years and there is plenty of stuff that I would like to see..especially last nights Center show featuring the Monterey Quartet.  My friend said that she went and her first response was “the sound sucked.”  That pretty much cinched it for me right there.  I get to come to The Cellar every night and here music like the concerts I mentioned above where I can hear every note, I can see the musicians sweating when it get intense on stage, I can see them look at me when they talk on the  mic and I fee like I have walked away like I was a part of something, part of an experience.  Im not going to sit here and compare Mike Allen to Chris Potter or Darren Radtke to Dave Holland or Chris Gestrin to Gonzalo Rubalcaba because there is no point.  I like hearing musicians at the top of their game playing well thought out music and providing an experience to everyone in the room.  Im sorry but in my many years of hearing jazz in big venues its hard to have an ‘experience.’

I suppose this is just my opinion and I’m not at all trying to deter people from going to see Sonny Rollins or Dave Holland etc.  Of course they are legends and you must see them when you have the chance.  What I can guarantee is there was nothing going on in the city that was more satisfying that Friday nights Mike Allen show. It had everything that a jazz concert should have. Couples Retreat

A LOVE SUPREME

What a great way to start the jazz festival at The Cellar.   Mike Allen’s Quartet played John Coltrane’s LOVE SUPREME to a packed house.  A lofty proposition for sure by Allen to tackle such a sacred piece of music but kudos to him and the band for their interpretation of it.  PHIL DYWER piano, PAUL RUSHKA bass and JULIAN MCDONOUGH drums all sounded absolutely wonderful. Just to make sure I wasn’t just caught up in the moment of being their live I’m listening to the recording that I made of the night and it was just as good as I thought.  allen

We tried to convince the audience to that it would be cool for the quartet to do it again in the second set but understandably they wanted to hear something different.  They got a treat because Dwyer pulled out his tenor and him and Mike played some two tenor tunes. It was very cool. I got a kick out of them playing PUTTIN ON THE RITZ. Kind of funny that one moment they’re navigating there way through one of them most influential pieces of music every written and the next moment they’re playing around with PUTTIN ON THE RITZ.

A great night had by all and Mike Allen should be commended!

Benny & Bucky and Ejazz

.!.

The Cable Guy trailer Doom release What an incredible two nights of classic jazz. Pianist Benny Green and guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli graced the stage and played beautiful jazz music in the classic tradition.  So many people could learn so many things from listening to these two geniuses play…such as how impoartant melody is, how important rhythm, groove and feel is and how important it is to entertain an audience.  You’d never guess by listening to these guys that they a almost 40 years apart in age (Bucky 83 and Benny 45).img_3481 They were also so great to deal with.  It was one of those ‘magical’ nights at the club that won’t soon be forgotten by everyone in the audience. It was neat to see two guitar players right up front as well (Bill Weeds and Bill Coon).

Got an email from my friend Bill King in Toronto today about the new ejazztv station that he has set up. There is some great footage of some concerts there including a beautiful Reg Schwager performance.  Please check it out at www.youtube.com/ejazztv

Martin and Lewis video

I have always felt that I have been pretty open minded musically when it comes to jazz but its always been clear that I like pretty much anything recorded between 1950 and 1960.  I have even favored many of the modernists in recent years. I have however found myself going back lately and really loveing…like REALLY loving a lot of the old school stuff.  For example BEN WEBSTER and THE OSCAR PETERSON TRIO, THE COMPLETE ILLINOIS JACQUET SESSSION 1945 - 50, THE LESTER YOUNG TRIO on Verve.  I have gotten more enjoyment out of this music than I could imagine.

img_3475Guitarists talking shop!  Man, they never quit!  It took me forever to get Bucky up on stage. I think my dad and Bill Coon went through the whole history of the guitar!

MUSINGS

1047_cover_200__mediumIts been a while since my last post.  Family life will do that to you. Actually I was hoping to write a little bit while Alana and Noah were away (they went up to Kamloops to visit her parents) but the time absolutely flew by.  One thing I did do a lot of was listen to some great new music.  One CD that arrived in my mailbox was the new Christian McBride CD called Kind Of Brown.  I can’t honestly say I was that excited about listening to it in fact I just kinda put it aside for a later time.  I ended up putting it on my iPod and listening to it while riding my bike to The Cellar (don’t say it).  I haven’t stopped since.  It’s a fantastic record. The writing is superb; modern but there hasn’t been any groove or feel sacrificed.  This is a big problem for me with a lot of records. Its almost as if some people write hard tunes just for the sake of being hard.  Im sure that the tunes on this record are now walks in the park to play on but the beauty about them is that they don’t sound hard.  Carl Allen (drums) really hooks up wonderfully with McBride but then again what drummer wouldn’t hook up with him. There is some very tasty playing by alto / soprano saxophonist Steve Wilson, some great contributions by a vibraphonist named Warren Wolf who I’ve never heard of and stellar piano playing by Eric Reed.  I don’t think the album is quite out yet but will be out in the next few weeks.  I think you get my point, this is a great record!

Okay, on the bike riding front.  This is something that I have recently taken up mainly due to the fact that now Alana has recovered from giving birth to our son and not wanting her to feel couped up in our small apartment.  We bought a bike and I have been riding to and from the club, to and from the radio station and to and from pilates. I have always had a rule that I won’t walk, run or ride to go to exercise but I have to say, riding to pilates is very cool.  I get a good ride, then a good workout, some stretching and then a good workout on the ride home.  It takes me about 30 minutes to get downtown and about 45 minutes to get from my house to the club.  The ride home however is alot longer and a lot tougher.  Its about 75 minutes from door to door.

Im really excited about WALK ON THE WILD SIDE - A TRIBUTE TO JIMMY SMITH happening at The Cellar on July 3rd and 4th.  Its going to be with a 12 piece big band and Montreal oirganist’s VANESSA RODRIGUES and MARTIN K. PETERSEN at the front. Its gonna be amazing.  We had a rehearsal with just the big band and it sounded kiling!

My new record Everything’s Coming Up Weeds is being added at a rapid rate on U.S. radio stations. This is very promising as it may be ‘chart-bound’ sooner than I thought.  This doesn’t mean much I suppose in the grand scheme other than a lot of people are hearing the record and the radio DJ’s love it.  I got a playlist from Kentucky today they playe BBs Blue Blues off my record sandwiched in between FREDDIE HUBBARD and BILL EVANS.  I had to chuckle.  I’ll be updating all the reviews and action on the record on my website at www.coryweeds.com .

I was over at my friends Brian Nations house today and he was telling me about the days when he was a young teenager he would to to a place in Montreal (I think called the Jazz Record Mart) and rent records. I think you’d pay $1.00 per month and then you could rent a maximum of 4 records per week at $.50 per record. Brian said he would run there every week and check out his maximum every week. I always love hearing stories from people that were around during that time.  You know the heyday of jazz, the vinyl era.  Nothing is more exciting to me than rooting through records whether it be at a store or someone’s house.  There is just something that is so great about that.  Anyways, going to Brian’s house is like going to Disneyland for me!  You can read about what I was talking about at his blog at www.boppin.com.  I couldn’t find the exact post but its there somewhere!

Anyone else completely dissappointed at the lack of print program for the jazz festival this year?  Im not going to get into it here but I am really upset that they abandoned that idea and I know many people who have come to the club have expressed the same displeasure.  Oh well.

Musings

Wow, 6 weeks into fatherhood.  A total gas so far!  The little guy is thankfully a fantastic sleeper which has allowed Alana and I to at least get a little bit of rest.  Its a different kind of rest though. Not exactly deep sleep.  I kinda have ‘baby brain.’ Forgetting stuff, having trouble with simple arithmetic and spelling..well forget it. I was never that  good at it anyways.

Alana’s brothers, their wives and their two daughters each came down to spend the weekend with us.  We crammed more into two days than most people do in a month.  Saturday it was up early and to the Aquarium ( I missed the dolphin show because we had to feed Noah). After a few hours there it was off to the beach before heading to TANPOPO for sushi.  The little guy slept through everything! Fantastic! The next day it was up early again down to Granville Island for a few hours and then a big picnic at Deer Lake Park. Im getting into this family vibe!

Im at the club right now recording Steve Kaldestad’s Quintet for an upcoming Cellar Live release.  If the first set is any indication we may have to release a box set!  KEVIN DEAN trumpet, ANDRE WHITE piano (both from Montreal), JESSE CAHILL drums and JODI PROZNICK bass. The band is seriously swinging. Its gonna be a fun weekend for sure.  Andre White just took a solo on piano that was unfreaking believable!

BUDDY MONTGOMERY / NJA's / LPs

I got the unfortunate news that vibraphonist / pianist BUDDY MONTGOMERY passed away at the age of 79.  At the end of this blog post you can read a story that posted some time ago about my experience with booking Buddy Montgomery at The Cellar for our 1 year anniversary. This is not a good year for musicians with the likes of Montgomery, F. Hubbard, D. Newman, H. Crawford and Jimmy McGriff passing away.  buddy

I just got back from my whirlwind tour of Toronto where I accepted the award for LABEL OF THE YEAR at the 2009 NATIONAL JAZZ AWARDS.  They were heavily dominated by Westerners this year in the nominations and the winners which is very cool. Its nice to see that the Canadian audiences are recognizing the great things that are happening out here on the Left Coast.  The awards ceremony was held at The Fleck Theater at Harbourfront in downtown Toronto.  Bill King and Pat Taylor did a fantastic job as they do every year.  My only criticism is that with it being in a  theatre, the social aspect of the evening was somewhat lost.  In 2008 they did it at the Palais Royale and it was more like a banquet style and for me personally it was much more enjoyable.  As I said, its just personal and kudos the the organizers for putting on a great event!

I hooked up with my friend Colin Story while there and he took me to this little cafe in Kensington Market where the owner loves jazz, sells old jazz lps etc. so I thought it would be cool. Sure enough when we got there WES MONTGOMERY’S FULL HOUSE was on which is one of my favorites. The records he had for sale were very cool. I picked up a couple of thigns that Im excited about listening to.  The funny thing however, is when I turned around to grab my coffee I noticed this beautifully framed picture of me hanging in the cafe.  It was for sale….$200!  I wanna meet the person who is gonna pay $200 for a picture of me! I was taken by Greg King when I was playing at The Rex. It was kinda funny to see that in the middle of Toronto!

I thought it would be great to bring vibraphonist / pianist Buddy Montgomery to The Cellar for a performance seeing as he was (and still is) the last of the living Montgomery Brothers. Buddy and his brothers Wes and Monk have a long association with Vancouver making it regular stop on their tours back in the 60’s. In fact part of The Montgomery Brothers In Canada was recorded at the old Cellar on Watson street.

The negotiations with Buddy were quite easy and things went really well. He had some air mile points that he was going to use to get up here and we agreed on a fee that we were both comfortable with. He did however (and rightfully so) ask for a deposit of 1/2 the fee. This was new to me and at that time I don’t even think we had that money in our bank account not to mention the show was still months away. I can’t remember what I did but I got the money together and sent it to him. All was good! The show was booked for a weekend in late mid September 14th & 15th, 2001. Its pretty easy to figure out what happened. September 11th, 2001 happened. Naturally everything was up in the air and it was pretty obvious that Buddy wasn’t going to be making it to Vancouver that weekend. We tried settling on another date but it wasn’t so easy as Buddy was really uneasy about committing to anything with all that was going on in the world. I knew that a show would happen but I just didn’t know when. Being as GREEN as I was at the time I stupidly asked for my deposit back. This made Buddy very uncomfortable and he said that he would happily give me the deposit back minus the airfare which was odd because he said he was going to use air miles which meant his flight cost would be virtually nothing. I was quite upset but Buddy being one of my hereos I didn’t want to upset him but felt strongly that he was in the wrong. We exchanged words and things were quite unpleasant. I think one of Buddy’s quotes was “you young punks are always messin shit up” We agreed that we would talk later to figure something out. I was so upset I called Ross Taggart almost in tears literally saying “Ross, Buddy hates me, what should I do? He called me a punk” etc. etc.

Ross was supposed to be on that gig so he had talked to Buddy in advance of him showing up here so he agreed to call him and see if he could smooth things over. To be honest I can’t remember exactly how that went but I did end up just saying to Buddy that the only way were going to make this right is for you to come up here see our great little club, play with these great musicians and have some fun and it will be all water under the bridge.

We managed to rebook for late October. He booked his ticket to arrive in Vancouver the night before the show at around 11:00 pm. I went to YVR and his flight was right on time. 11:30 no Buddy, 11:45 no Buddy, midnight no Buddy! The airport was literally empty. I called him in California and low and behold he answered the phone. I said “Buddy, its Cory.” “Hey man what’s u?” he replied. “I’m at the airport waiting for you.” “I thought I was coming in the day before the show.” he said. “Look at your calendar Buddy, look at your calendar.” With that he said he would be on the next plane.

When he arrived the next day, he looked at me, I looked at him and I said “well Buddy I guess us young guys ain’t the only ones that mess shit up!” We hugged and that was the end of it. He played his ass off at he club that weekend and everyone had a great time!

in New York around 2 years ago he has started his own record label, set up the club to make virtually every show available for download and now you can watch whats going on at the club every single night via the video camera hung right in the middle of the club.  The audio is actually pretty decent. Don’t get me wrong its not perfect but it gives you a good idea of how it feels to be inside the club.  I got to know Spike over a few visits to New York City and then brought his co-led band ‘The Uptown Quintet’ to The Cellar a few years back. He is  great guy and is to be commended for his hard work at resurecting the Greenwich Village night spot when things were looking pretty grim!   Check it out!

Lovin Fatherhood!

img_3225img_3205img_3166Here is a trio of pictures of Noah.  Fatherhood so far is going really awesome! I love the little guy so much. Both Alana and I are managing to get some rest which is good.  There isn’t a whole lot to do (at least for the dad) in the first little while. The little guy sleeps, eats and poops a lot and we manage to have a good handle on all of these things so, so far so good.  Its neat to see him start to discover things and figure out that he has limbs and all these working parts etc. etc.  By the way the picture of him with with the saxophone is the soprano saxophone. I want Noah to be a B3 Player! There is no way I’m going to have him playing saxophone and piping his daddy early on!  He had his first jazz listening experience the other day: DOUG WATKINS: AT LARGE with Hank Mobley, Donald Byrd, Duke Jordan, Kenny Burrell and Art Taylor. He dug it!  We then moved onto Elmo Hope’s Trio / Sextet and that seemed to make him hungry.  Now as I type this he is sleeping soundly to the sounds of DAVE SIEBELS with GORDON GOODWIN’S BIG PHAT BAND.  B3 Organ with big band!  I love it.  The record is killing and you should check it out! I have yet to play him anything that I’m on as Im scared he’ll cry and I’ll be really offended!

Other CDs I have been checking out include: TERRY ADAMS: HOLY TWEET, JOEY DEFRANCESCO: FINGER POPPIN, PAPA JOHN DEFRANCESCO: BIG SHOT and SCOTTY BARNHART: SAY IT PLAIN. All great stuff!

Ocean’s Thirteen move

Any Suggestions?

People have been asking me what was Noah’s first “jazz” experience in terms of listening.  I haven’t even really had time to think about that.  We have been listening to a great CD by guitarist JIM NICHOLS called Lullaby.  Im really not sure where to start little Noah on the jazz thing.  I mean should I jump right into Hank Mobley and Teddy Edwards or should I ease him in with a little ‘Kind Of Blue.”  Or should I start him right in the Hammond B3 stuff and let him get used to that?  Help!
